CREATIVE MOVEMENT (3-7 year olds)

Introduces various movements for coordination and motor development. Dance patterns include emphasis on walk, run, skip, march, hop, animal, and improvised movements combined with simplified ballet and modern dance techniques. This class is specifically designed and structured to enhance the delicate gross and fine motor movement of this age group through creative expresssion. Creative drama and music techniques are also incorporated to introduce DCYE's complete performer curriculum.


BALLET & MODERN (8-17 year olds)

Consists of one very structured class in ballet and one class in modern dance. All ballet classes are based on classical Russian technique. Modern classes include a combination of techniques, from Dunham (Afro-Caribbean) to Horton, designed to develop strength and rhythmic ability.

TAP (3-17 year olds)

Uses various styles in the course of the year, including hoofing and broadway. Emphasis is placed on the development of rhythm and timing.

DRAMA (12-17 year olds)

Explores creative dramatics which stimulates the beginning theater student. Workshops in concentration, observation, imagination, voice/diction, mime, and monologues are the main focus of attention. In addition, scene work with emphasis on improvisation and stage presence are introduced, as well as sensory stimulation, emotional recall, and the method of acting.

TARATIBU (8-18 year olds)

Combines contemporary military drill with South African Gum Boot, and traditional African dance movements. The DCYE TARATIBU DRILL TEAM program was founded in 1990 and is directed by Arla Scott, Assistant Director of DCYE. There are three well trained drill teams within the ensemble: 1) the FULANI's: ages 8-11; 2) the ASSANTE's: ages 12-14; 3) the ZULU's: ages 15-18.

MUSIC (8-17 year olds)

Focuses on a combination of musicianship and vocal techniques that include enhancement of performance skills through a structured study program of various musical styles. Emphasis is placed on articulation, style, characterization, and basic music skills.
